Autumn School in Palma, Mallorca (October 2025)

In October 2025 the TADFsolutions consortium met in Palma for the last full network meeting involving all the doctorate fellows in addition to the professors.

The school was officially opened by Dr. Gert-Jan Wetzelaer of the Max Planck Institute who gave a presentation entitled „Single-layer organic light-emitting diodes based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence“. As per all network meetings each of the doctorate fellows gave the consortium an update on their research and their progress towards the projects objectives, as set out in the official EU grant agreement. In addition, the students received a training session on „Career Perspectives and CV advice“ whereby the consortium and external guests gave the students invaluable tips on pursuing careers in both academia and industry. The programme also involved a supervisory board meeting and an update on the work packages.

During the duration of the meeting the consortium was fortunate to be accompanied by Hiro Kaji from the University of Kyoto and Anna Hayer from Merck, both associate partners of TADFsolutions.

It wasnt all just presentations, as with every network meeting, a large aspect of the network meetings is the exchange of information which takes place over coffee breaks/ meals/ excursions which couldnt have been in a nicer location as Palma. It was an excellent end to a very successful network meeting programme.

Industrial School – Fluxim, Winterthur – Press Release

Shaping the Future of OLEDs – One Fellow at a Time

Fluxim was proud to host the latest TADFsolutions Doctoral Network meeting at our headquarters in Winterthur—an exciting initiative funded by the EU Horizon program that unites top academic and industrial minds to advance OLED innovation.

As a consortium partner, we welcomed 12 bright Doctoral Fellows for hands-on training with our OLED and display R&D tools, including state-of-the-art simulation and measurement platforms. The sessions provided practical insights into the challenges OLED developers face and the tools that help overcome them.

This meeting wasn’t just about science—it was about shaping careers. TADFsolutions goes beyond research, offering secondments, international collaboration, and mentorship through partners like Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, and Kyoto University. It’s a true launchpad for globally minded, industry-ready researchers.

Thanks to all who joined us in Winterthur. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

TADFsolutions is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network (DN) funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2021 which started on 1st October 2022 and will run until 31st September 2026.

The Project GA Number is 101073045

Industrial School in Winterthur, Switzerland (March 2025)

In March 2025 the TADFsolutions consorium met in Winterthur, Switzerland the home of the TADFsolutions beneficiary Fluxim. An aspect of this meeting was an industrial workshop whereby the Doctorate Fellows received training from Fluxim on their simulation products. In addition the consortium received a tour around the Fluixm offices including demos of their products.

The school was officially opened with a presentation from Peter Levermore (Excyton) entitled „TurboLED : Efficient Display Designs“. Additionally Anna Hayer (Merck) presented on „Commercial and Industrial Aspects of OLED Material Development –Researchers in Industry“. The programme also involved update presentations from each of the DF’s on the progress of their research, a supervisory board meeting and an update on the work packages. At the end of the week the DF’s took part in a workshop from the external training providers Accelopment which focused on „Grant Writing“.

During the duration of the meeting the consortium was fortunate to be accompanied by Hiro Kaji from the University of Kyoto and Anna Hayer from Merck, both associate partners of TADFsolutions, as well as Peter Levermore from Excyton who all provided their invaulable input in to the scientifc progression of TADFsolutions.

And as with every network meeting it is not all hard work in a meeting room. A large aspect of the network meetings is the exchange of information which takes place over coffee breaks/ meals/ excursions. During the week we went to Zürich where we received a guided tour around the Lindt Museum, which was not only very tasty but also really informative about the history of chocolate.

ICEL 2024 Kyoto

Last week was a productive time for the TADFsolutions group – Mahni Fatahi, Kamilė Bareikaitė, and Christian McDonald had an opportunity to present their work at the ICEL2024 in Kyoto, Japan. They were also accompanied by Vasilis Georgakopoulos‘ poster, presented by a representative from FLUXiM AG.

We are happy to report that Christian won a best poster award!

Autumn School in St Andrews, Scotland (August 2024)

The Autumn School took place in St Andrews, Scotland over four days with all of the network and several external partners in attendance. The network meeting was opened with a presentation entitled „Development of Stable Blue OLED’s and understanding TADF mechanism based on Photophysical Kinetic Analysis“ presented by Youichi Tsuchiya from Kyushu University (a TADFsolutions external partner).

Included in the programme was an update on the progression of the scientific research in addition the Doctorate Fellows received training on: „Paper Writing“ from Karl Ziemelis (Nature) as well as „IP Rights“ from Marks and Clerk the Patent Lawyers. A „Career Strategies“ workshop was also provided by Dirk Murray-Palm (Golin Wissenschaftsmanagement).

ICSM 2024 Dresden

From lab coats to conference rooms: here’s how our ICSM 2024 experience went down.

In July, six of us PhD students headed to Dresden for the International Conference on the Science of Materials (ICSM). It was a solid experience—presenting our research, getting feedback, and connecting with others in the field. We shared our work through posters and talks, which led to some useful discussions and ideas for what’s next.

A big thank you to our advisors, colleagues, and everyone who supported us on this journey. Dresden was a beautiful backdrop to a memorable conference, and we’re already looking forward to future events!

High-tech research and promotion of young scientists: University of Bayreuth leads EU-funded network on organic light-emitting diodes

High-tech research and promotion of young scientists: University of Bayreuth leads EU-funded network on organic light-emitting diodes

The international research network „TADFsolutions“, coordinated by the University of Bayreuth, was recently launched. It is funded by the EU with a total of about 3.1 million euros over the next four years. The network aims to develop semiconductor materials for a new generation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These are intended to show unprecedented luminosity and color purity, consume little energy and have a significantly longer lifetime than current commercially available light-emitting diodes.
